When was the last time you had a good night’s sleep?

We are now sleeping less than what we did in the past.

The right amount of sleep largely depends on your age. The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following for different age group:

World Sleep Association study showing there is a growing trend in sleep disorders with an increasing number of affected populations in the country especially during this pandemic.

Sleep is critical to our health because if we do not get enough sleep can weaken the immune system. Based on National Institute of Neurological Disorder, insufficient sleep or poor-quality sleep can dull our brain and reduced memory.

According to the FMCG Gurus’ survey series 2020, 18% of consumers have become more conscious about their sleep health resulting from worry about COVID 19. It is important to sleep more than 8 hours per day because without a good sleep could affect our health. 

In one review journal (Sleep. 2008 May 1;31(5)), suggest that short sleep duration may be associated with the development of obesity from childhood to adulthood. Without a good sleep, it can affect our hormones that regulate appetite which eventually tend to eat more the next day. Those good sleepers tend to eat less compare to those who don’t.

If long term sleep less than 7-8 hours per night have a greater risk of heart disease and stroke (Eur Heart J. 2011). Several studies confirmed poor sleep affects emotions and social interactions. All these may link to mental health issues like depression or insomnia.

In order to achieve optimal health, we need to take care of our sleep. Taking good food could help us getting better sleep.
