It is the most important festival in China and a major event in some other Asian countries like Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia and Philippines.

According to the legend, the monster, Nian (which sound as same ‘year’ in Chinese) would show up at start of every year to eat villagers and livestock. To chase away the monster, people displayed red paper, wore red clothes, burned the bamboo, and lit the candles. These have become traditions until today.

Each Chinese year is linked to an animal sign according to Chinese zodiac. This year, 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit that symbolizes grace, beauty, longevity, peace and prosperity. It is expected to be a year of hope.

Besides the traditional to honor ancestors and deities, the Chinese New Year is also celebrated through family reunions, parades and fireworks. Different Asian cultures have various ways celebrating the new year.

As in China, family is of core value in traditional Chinese culture, and the Spring Festival is typically a very family-oriented celebration. The Spring Festival always indicates the world’s largest human migration as oversea Chinese and Chinese migrants return home to celebrate the new year with their families.

In Korea, the first day of lunar new year is Seollal, where families exchange gifts and eat rice cake soup and savory pancakes. While in Vietnam, the lunar New Year is called Tết, they enjoy special foods like Thit Thịt Kho trứng (braised pork with duck eggs) and bánh chung (sticky rice cakes).

In some other Asian countries like Malaysia and Singapore, the Chinese wear the red clothes during Chinese New Year as red and gold symbolizes good fortune. The children receive red envelopes which are called ang pao that are stuffed with money given by the older family members as blessing.
