Air pollution in South East Asia

Air pollution has been a global issue and countries in South East Asia are experiencing high level of air pollution especially in urban areas. The main causes are biomass burning, urbanization, vehicles and industrial emission.

The air quality has been unhealthy in major cities of Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand. On top of that, forest fire and agricultural burning has been alarming in Indonesia due to its annual recurrence and has affected the region badly especially the neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore.

Below in the blue section shows that almost the whole South East Asia population (80% to 100%) has been exposed to air pollutant PM 2.5 exceeding 10 µg/m³ as set by the WHO recommendation;

The exposure to air pollutant has been linked to health effects vary from increased respiratory complications to asthma, allergies, pneumonia and bronchitis or decreased lung function involving all groups of ages.
