exercise alone sufficient for weight management

Is exercise alone sufficient for weight management?

Physical exercise is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as any physiological movement that needs energy expenditure and is produced by skeletal muscles. Physical exercise encompasses all forms of movement, whether it is done for fun, to go to and from locations, or as part of one’s job. Physical activity, both moderate and strenuous, is beneficial to one’s health.

The WHO recommends at least 150 – 300 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activities or at least 75 – 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity; or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity per week for adults.

However, in Taiwan, according to the Health Promotion Administration (國民健康署), the number of Taiwanese considered overweight, or with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 24, has risen from 32.7 percent in 1993 to 1996 to a shockingly high 45.4 percent in 2013 to 2016.

But, according to figures provided by the Sports Administration (體育署), 83.1 percent of the population participates in at least one sort of sport, and 33.5 percent of the population exercises regularly. This has made many Taiwanese puzzled over this situation.
