WHAT IS NUTROXSUN?

The Mediterranean is a region of high solar exposure. This has caused the indigenous plants to protect themselves from solar radiation through strong, efficient antioxidant defences.

UV RADIATION  AND THE SKIN

Small amounts of ultraviolet rays (UV) are beneficial for the organism and is essential for Vitamin D production. However, prolonged exposure to solar radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin. Sunburn overexposure (erythema) is often the first sign of excessive exposure to these damaging rays, whilst long term consequences include photodermatitis, photoaging and ultimately various forms of skin cancer.

Long-term exposure to the sun’s UV rays can damage the skin´s fibers, causing the skin to sag, lose its elasticity and form fine wrinkles. Sun exposure also causes mottled pigmentation and a sallow yellow complexion, an overall uneven tone and discolouration. In fact, up to 90% of the visible changes commonly attributed to ageing may be caused by sun exposure.

UVB is the main culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging (photoaging). They also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays, and UVA-induced skin cancer is also becoming increasingly relevant. Consequently, an adequate photoprotection against both UVB and UVA is essential to control and prevent UV-related skin disorders.

 

Popular outdoor activities, recreational exposure or even a simple street walk can give rise to excess exposure to UV radiation.Two types of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, damage the skin, and both cause premature aging.

Skin photoprotection is traditionally referred to only topical sunscreens. The use of topical sunscreen alone often fails to provide reliable all-day protection for several reasons:

  • Consumers generally do not apply correctly regarding quantity and forget to reapply every 2 hours.  
  • The average person only applies half to a quarter of the amount of sunscreen needed to achieve the SPF rating on the bottle. So a SPF 50 is more like an SPF 10 to 3 with the average application.
  • Most people only apply when are actively seeking exposure, however 80% of sun exposure occur in normal daily life. UVA rays hold steady throughout the day and year.
  • Even if well applied, topical photoprotection may neutralize only 55% of free radicals, the others continue to damage the skin.
  • Effectiveness is affected by perspiration, washing, or rubbing.
  • Therefore, adding a dietary approach to the topical product provides a more complete and efficient photoprotection.  

HOW DOES NUTROXSUN WORK?

The phenolic compounds, diterpenes, and flavonoids contained in the rosemary and grapefruit extract work complementary and synergistically to counteract the negative effects of solar radiation.  

GLOBAL ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION. Nutroxsun® presents water-soluble antioxidants that quench and scavenge the first stage intracellular free radicals  generated by solar radiation, thereby preventing oxidative damage of lipids, proteins, and DNA. Lipid-soluble anti- oxidants are also present that block the generation of  lipoperoxy radicals due to cell membranes degradation  and resulting in inflammation, protein degradation, and DNA damage.  

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY. Essential for the inhibition of successive tissue damage that occurs after UV irradiation.

PHOTOAGEING PREVENTION AND REPARATION. Inhibiting in a dose-dependent manner multiple skin Metalloproteinases (MMP-1; MMP-2; MMP-3; MMP-8 and MMP-12) that are responsible for excessive degradation of cutaneous structure components such as collagen, elastin, fibronectin, and laminin.

DNA PROTECTION. Decreasing the number of UVB-induced DNA breaks in human skin cells.

HOW DOES NUTROXSUN WORK?

(*) Statistically significant when compared to 24 h.

24 h. after exposure to UVB light, skin redness increased about 40 % in all the groups.  But only one hour later (25 hours) the group taking 250mg already showed a significant reduction in skin redness compared with its maximum level at 24 hours, while skin redness in the placebo group remained 4% higher. The 100mg group reported significantly reduced skin redness after 48 hours while the placebo group needed 72 hours before this was observed.

A significant increase in the Minimal erythema dose (MED) – the threshold UV dose that may cause sunburn–was observed for NutroxSun® group; MED increased by 29.8% after 2 months of treatment. These findings confirm earlier results obtained in a previous study where individuals consuming  NutroxSun® presented a 34% increase in their MED after 2 months, rising to 56% after 3 months (J Photochem Photobiol B. 2014). A significant decrease of UVA-stimulated lipoperoxide (LPO) content in the skin was observed. Skin horny layer malondialdehyde (MDA) content 4 h after UVA exposure was significantly decreased compare to placebo, in which a lipoperoxidation skin levels were increased.            

 

A significant decrease in the wrinkle depth of the ‘crow’s feet’ was observed among subjects consuming 100 mg of NutroxSun daily.  Wrinkle depth variation was statistically significant after 2 weeks and decreased approximately 15% after 2 months of treatment. A significant increase of the skin´s elasticity was also observed among subjects consuming 100 mg of NutroxSun daily, and at the end of the study the net elasticity was improved by 9%   

 

The evidence is clear, but there´s more. Participants were also asked whether they noticed any improvements in their skin during the test and very interesting results were found. Self -assessment questionnaire main results:
