The Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) of the Spanish Ministry of Economy, certifies the fulfillment of the first milestone of the R&D Project: “Experimental Research and Development of New, Healthier Foods and Advanced Packages” of the strategic program “CIEN.”

The CDTI Administration Council of the Spanish Ministry of Economy has certified the completion of the first milestone of the R&D Project: “Experimental Research and Development of New, Healthier Foods and Advanced Packages” of the strategic program “CIEN.”

This project was selected by the CDTI in the 2015 “CIEN” program, whose purpose is to finance large experimental development projects in future strategic areas and with potential international projection.

With an investment of 7 million euros, the objective of the study was to develop new functional ingredients and formulations for the food industry, as well as new systems and advanced materials for packaging, creating healthier meat and multifunctional products that respond to consumer´s demands and public authorities regarding health and sustainability materials.

The initiative is composed of a national consortium with seven industrial partners, which include some of the most relevant companies of the agri-food and packaging sectors of the country. The consortium is led by UVE, S.A. and includes as participating partners ELPOZO ALIMENTACIÓN, S.A., BANDESUR ALCALÁ, S.A., BTSA Biotecnologías Aplicadas, MONTELOEDER, S.L., NUREL, S.A., y PLASTIENVASE, S.L. Also, 11 prestigious public research organizations participate in the consortium, of different Universities and public research centers (CSIC).

In Monteloeder, we work in the development of functional ingredients, using plant extracts, with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce blood pressure, improve an individual´s lipid profile, and lower body weight; which can be used in the food industry, including nutritional supplements and nutricosmetics.

We have currently shown in human intervention studies that a blend of hibiscus and lemon verbena extracts can help an overweight or obese individual lose body fat, as well as decrease their appetite. Also, a clinical study has commenced, in collaboration with Miguel Hernandez University and University Hospital of Elda, with hypertensive individuals in order to prove the efficiency of this ingredient in this condition.
