A Digital Life era: Why we have to live it

Following on my informal analysis of ways to live and make our neighbors live “a worthwhile life”, I was reckoning on the relevance of the “Digital stuff” and “Digitization” in/of our life.

As for example, how much time do we spend using our mobile for social (and not only social) media activities or stay connected to the Internet. A study of some years ago, commissioned by Nokia, found that, the first thing that most people do in the morning is checking their phones, and suggests that people, on average, check their phones an average of 150 times/day. There are thousands of similar analysis, here a nice summary, and it seems definitely proven that we spend a huge part (up to 4hs a day) of our life on our mobile.

And what about our frequent subconscious fear for the suspicious world of unknown spies hidden inside any technological tool? From the webcam in our laptops, to our mobile sensors or even the robovacs that have been cleaning our houses silently and efficiently but that now have been defined as an unbelievable source of information about our homes and, therefore, even ourselves or the autonomous cars that have been already associated to less jobs and therefore banned from some country ahead of time.

Alienation, privacy issues, social ineptitude, unemployment risks, etc. Many concerns and negative terms come associated to new technologies and the digitizaton in our life.

However, let’s calm down and analyze it coolly. I have been often involved in conversations with interlocutors (spanning different generations and professional backgrounds) arguing against some of these new technologies and my first and unique constant answer is always:

THEY ARE ALREADY HERE and will be present over and over, every day more!

A taxi driver can choose to protest against App-related ride services (UBER, LYFT, Cabify) (and, most likely, everyone can complain of any similar services is facing in his/her own business environment) or, alternatively, we can decide to use that time to think about it and see what they are offering and we aren’t …and act consequently.

It is not a matter of rights and historical business models. Every UBER passenger that have once used that service will reiterate to use any App-based ride, whenever he will have access to it (that is every time he will be in a country or city where UBER, LYFT or any other of them is available and not opposed) instead of a regular taxi. Maybe, we can discuss the users loyalty to one or the other App-based ride services. But the comparison with the classical taxi services is not feasible because users loyalty is based on easiness and quality associated with the service they paid for and, thanks to these unbeatable advantages, App-based rides Users will stick with them.

As someone has said, “ TIME IS NOW”, time to improve our way of thinking and acting in our work (and, – why not? – in every aspect of your everyday life as well).

Let’s try to be curious more than scared and entrepreneurial more than conservative, because we are in a networked world where we must be able to interact with our partners in a simple and personalized way, providing high quality services and claiming a fair cost.

You may find this article very interesting, from Marc Bonchek and Shifthinking team, and I hope you will have your Epiphany, that “AHA” moment and can see the world through a different lens.

Digitization is nothing but this: a new and more comprehensive interaction way, applicable to any aspect of our life. And Digitization is here and now. Digital transformation is the common denominator of all aspect of our life and every Industry is going through a Digital Transformation. The good news is that this Digital era is giving space and opportunity to everyone willing to act and participate in the transformation. Again, “Time is now”: it’s Time to ask ourselves if we want to ride the wave.

Let’s talk soon about Digital transformation in Healthcare, let me add: the fascinating “Digital Health” world! See you here, on Monteloeder blog for Digitization and Medicine, Therapeutics, Well-being…
